As befits an area with such a rich and varied history, the Tweed Valley is home to some superb historic houses, each with many a story to tell. There’s the ancient royal stronghold of Traquair near Innerleithen, plus Bowhill House and Country Estate, the magnificent Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch, near Selkirk. And don’t forget lovely Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, on the banks of the Tweed near Tweedbank.
And if gardens are your passion, we have plenty on offer there too, from the woodland and formal gardens at Kailzie Gardens – with the added attractions of osprey watching, fishing and mini-golf – to the beautiful setting of Dawyck Botanic Gardens, one of the world’s finest arboreta (which also has an award-winning visitor centre).
And all just an hour from Edinburgh!
